Well, the cold weather, snow, and ice we had this past winter literately put our yearly chili supper on ice! So instead, in honor of the Cinco de Mayo holiday, we held a fiesta and auction to celebrate the holiday!
The event was held at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church on Tuesday, May 5th, 2015 from 5:30PM until 9:00PM. Participants bought their own dishes that helped to make up a taco bar. One Anderson County Democrat bought his own homemade salsa!
After a brief meeting that saw some new party members join, we heard from Harrison Walford, who was involved in the recent state convention in Spring Hill, TN. Former State Representative Jim Hackworth introduced the speaker for the evening, former State Representative John Litz of Morristown.
Mr. Litz is currently the State Vice Chair of the Tennessee Democratic Party, who works closely with the newly elected state chair, Mary Mancini. He gave an engaging speech encouraging party members to get involved, get the word out about our cause, and not to be afraid to engage our fellow Tennesseans. A lot of misinformation circulates about us that needs to be corrected. In a visual example of the goal of our party, at the start of the speech walked to the back of the room. Mr. Litz said, “I’m back here as the Tennessee Democratic Party represents everyone in the room, not just those sitting up front”. Our party represents all of us, rich and poor alike.
After his speech, we held an auction that helped raise money for our party. Many lucky county Democrats got to go home with everything from paintings to concert tickets with funds going to help feed our donkey!
